After haggling with the captain and bribing the harbour master I left Lamu on a dhow, a single mast ship with a sail that can be manipulated into any positions. The ship I was on worked the east coast from Lamu, Mombassa then Zanzibar, transporting wood down south then bringing back something else (spices?). I was the only westerner and it took 3 days, the blokes were friendly but didnt really know what to make of this strange 19 year old. I was also quite sick on the journey, all we had to eat was Ugali (nasty mashed corn) and very strange fish we ate on the way. This picture is setting sail from Lamu.

I can't find my best pictures of the ship. Heres one of me, I remember the fella insisting he take this picture for my mum
